In Victoria’s high rainfall zone many farmers burn crop stubble each year. This is to mitigate against problems that result from the high crop load such as pests and machinery blockage. However, the straw is a potential resource, and burning the straw creates emissions. RMCG assisted farmers to investigate alternative uses for straw that would allow farmers to make a return from straw and avoid the emissions created by burning straw. Some possible uses for straw are producing energy, animal feed, animal bedding and compost. The benefits of pelletising the straw were also investigated to make the straw more transportable.
